Choosing for a team? Private AI for your team sizes one machine by how many people ask at once.

How the picker decides

Each job is one model at one setting. Chat runs at 4-bit (Q4_K_M) with 8k of context, the setting most people use. Agents run at 64k of context, which tools like OpenClaw ask for, with models whose chat template passes tools through. Images and video run ComfyUI's own template for each model, with the best file each card holds.

Runs it well means the model fits with room to spare: it needs at most 85% of the memory the GPU can use, well inside the 5% margin this site keeps on every fit, so the conversation or the render has space. For language models it also means answering at 25 tokens per second or faster for one user. For images and video it means the best file loads with that room left for the working memory a render needs. A rental counts by the same rule. Within each group the machines with the least memory come first, because memory is what you pay for.

Memory is what the GPU can use, not what the box has. Macs give the GPU about 75% of their memory, a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 lets 96 GB of its 128 GB be set aside for graphics, and the DGX Spark and RTX Spark use what NVIDIA documents. Each machine is shown at the memory option named in its row. Speeds are ceilings from memory bandwidth; ≤ marks the ones real runtimes fall furthest below. The same numbers, card by card, are on every GPU page.

Buy or rent

Hours decide it more often than price. A machine that works every day pays for itself; one you use a few hours a month rarely does, and renting the same memory for those hours costs less. Put the price you are looking at, your electricity rate and your real hours into the build vs rent calculator: it returns the month owning becomes cheaper, or says it never does. Every provider's hourly price is in the cloud GPU price guide.

The machines themselves are compared in more depth in personal AI computers compared and DGX Spark vs Strix Halo vs Mac Studio. To check one model on one card, use the LLM checker or the ComfyUI checker.

Where the store links go

Store links point at the maker's own page, through /go/, which adds one to that day's count of clicks: the date, the page, the site that sent you and your two-letter country, with no cookie, IP address or identifier (the privacy notice has the detail). Where a store pays us for a sale, the link says so beside it. No machine is ranked, shown or left out because of a store's program: the order is the memory and speed above, nothing else. How we make money.

Questions

What computer do I need to run AI locally?
It depends on the model, and memory decides first. For an everyday assistant of the class most people settle on, Qwen3.8 27B, the smallest machines that run it well have 24 GB for the GPU: RTX 4090 PC, RTX 3090 PC (used) and Olares One. At 8k of context it needs 18.0 GB. A lighter model such as Gemma 4 12B runs well from 16 GB. The biggest open model people commonly run at home, gpt-oss 120B, needs 71.4 GB, so only machines whose GPU can use 96 GB or more hold it.
Can a Mac run local AI models?
Yes, for language models, and the big ones fit. macOS lets the GPU use about 75% of a Mac's memory, so a MacBook Pro M5 Max with 128 GB holds gpt-oss 120B and generates at most 145 tokens per second, and a Mac Studio M5 Ultra at most 284 tokens per second. Reading a long prompt in is slower than on an NVIDIA card. For images and video this picker checks NVIDIA cards only: Macs run ComfyUI, but the memory check is not made for them.
Is a mini PC good for running LLMs?
For large mixture-of-experts models, yes: a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC holds gpt-oss 120B at about 61 tokens per second, and the DGX Spark at about 65 tokens per second, because only a small part of those models is read per token. A dense model is slower on them: Qwen3.8 27B runs at about 11 tokens per second on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC and about 12 tokens per second on the DGX Spark, under the 25 tokens per second that read as instant. The memory is large; the bandwidth that sets speed is modest.
How much GPU memory do I need for AI images and video?
Less than for language models. Z-Image holds with room to work from 16 GB, and Wan 2.2 (Image to video, A14B) from 24 GB with its FP8 scaled file. The largest here want more: FLUX.2 dev fits with room from 32 GB and LTX-2.5 from 32 GB. On 24 GB, Olares One and Ghost Core hold FLUX.2 dev only just, with its NVFP4 file for Blackwell cards. Cards too small for them stream them from system memory: it works, slowly.
Is it cheaper to rent a GPU than to buy one?
For occasional use, usually yes. A card that runs Qwen3.8 27B rents from $0.17 an hour (one RTX 3090 on SaladCloud, read 19 October 2026), and one for gpt-oss 120B from $1.69. Buying wins when the machine works most days. The build vs rent calculator finds the month owning becomes cheaper, with your price, hours and electricity.
  • Memory and speed: the same formulas as the LLM checker and every GPU page (weights + KV cache + overhead; speed from memory bandwidth for one user), at the settings above. Image and video: the ComfyUI checker's file sizes and stages.
  • Machines: 16 machines, each tied to its card's or chip's maker figures on its GPU page. No hardware prices: they moved too much in 2026 to print.
  • Hourly prices: each provider's own price list or price API, read 19 October 2026, as listed in the cloud GPU price guide.
